Here are a few interesting Internet statistics that I have compiled in the last few weeks: - Number of Internet users by end 1999: 196 million (10% in developing nations -DCs, 44% in the US) - Expected number of Net users by 2003: 505 million (16% in DCs, 35% in the US). - Number of Web pages on the Net (1999): 800 million (or 4 pages per Net user!) - Number of Web sites June 1999: 5 million - E-commerce spending in 1998: 50 billion (2% in DCs, 74% in th US) bought by 1.2 million customers - Expected e-commerce spending by 2003: 1.5 trillion (6% in DCs, 54% in the US) - Most popular products bought on line: books, software, music, travel, hardware, clothes and electronics - Expected e-commerce sales for this Christmas: 9.5 billion - Online add spending in 1999: 2.8 billion - Most popular "search" site: Yahoo with 44% of all net searches - Most popular Web server software: Apache (55%) - 70% of all Net traffic goes to less than 4,500 sites - Most popular browsing themes in the US: Entertainment (72%) and news (52%) Sources: IDC, Netcraft, NEC Research Institute, ALexa, Network Solutions among others.
