First study on language, focused on French and taking in consideration some Spanish. AltaVista comparative measurements of presence of English, French and Spanish words on the WWW. 50 words sample, determinated without methodological method from the linguistic point of view, was used. Very approximative result, representing an English/French ratio in the region of 22 and French/Spanish ration in the region of 2,4.

First study on culture, focused on the French and taking in consideration the hispanity. AltaVista comparative measurements of the quantity of names of culturally representative individuals on the web pages: nearly 500 persons distributed among 13 categories. The result, subjective, shows a quite important presence of the French-speaking culture, in comparison with north-american, in areas where the culture and the trade are not confused.

Important update, introduced at the "Visionarios" meeting, in Caracas.
  • Analysis of the limitations of search engines and of the relative presence of diacritics . Recommendation to give up AltaVista and use Hotbot.
  • The "empty set complement method" applied to AltaVista gives a rough idea of the presence of languages. It is derived from the AltaVista languages recognition algorithm.
  • Critic evaluation of the Alis Technologies research results.

French continues progress slowly, and Spanish is now very close to French.

Important changes in the method which permit to obtain rigorous results.
  • Consideration of all the latin languages: Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Rumanian.
  • Definition of a sample corresponding to rigorous linguistic criteria.
  • Measurement with Hotbot in the WWW.
  • Measurement in the Usenet with DejaNews.
  • Setting-up of the reliable intervals at 90% and 99%.
  • Weighting of the results corresponding to the size of linguistic areas .

Any noteworthy difference for the study concerning the french-speaking cultural presence.

  • Use of the same methodology. It has, however, been improved for the categories, the choice and the number of individuals, and extension to individuals speaking all the latin languages.
  • Analysis of certain results per language and in the reference language.
