Dominican Republic president seeks SKorean help with
'e-government'(updated 02:19 p.m.)
2006/6/30
SEOUL, South Korea (AP)
The Dominican Republic's president said Friday that his country is seeking
South Korea's help to set up an electronic government system, and that
South Korea could use his country as a springboard for exports to the U.S.
Leonel Fernandez held a summit with South Korea's President Roh Moo-hyun
earlier Friday, and signed an agreement on building an "e-government"
system in Dominican Republic.
Fernandez said the purpose of his trip, the first by a Dominican Republic
leader to South Korea in 44 years, was to "strengthen the relationship
between both nations."
"Korea has been very successful in the application of its e-government.
The Dominican Republic is in its early stage," Fernandez said at a news
conference.
South Korea has the world's highest per capita rate of broadband Internet
connections.
Fernandez also said his country's free-trade agreement with the United
States could help South Korea boost its exports to that country, which is
near the Dominican Republic.
"We can triangulate our relationship, as the Dominican Republic can serve
as a springboard for (South Korean) exports targeted into the eastern
seaboard of the U.S.," Fernandez said.
The Dominican Republic, a Caribbean island nation with 9.1 million people,
became independent from the Spanish Empire in 1865.
Fernandez was scheduled to leave for Japan on Saturday.
