As a History

The Carnival is the popular celebration of greater tradition of Dominican Republic. If from century XVI " there were masks in the city of Santo Domingo ", the certain thing is that the colonial tradition grew with you develop 27 republicans of the 16 February of 1844 and the August of 1865, to the point of that almost since then our carnivals are celebrated in these dates, does not matter at least if they in general are outside carnestolendas and already within own cuaresma, first. As it is known, the carnival happens before cuaresma, that is time of penance and preparation for the passion of Christ. Apparently, the word carnival has its origin in the Italian voices meat is worth, that mean good bye to the meat, like a test of the granted sensual licenses to the faithfuls during carnestolendas. Soon, with the centuries,
a narrow bond between the Christianity and the pagan celebrations settled down, that were absorbed by that one. Between us, for example, the pigs of Santiago appeared after the Restoration, under protection of the dances of masks celebrated in the large house of Madame Garca.
