WASHINGTON, OCTOBER 30, 2000-The World Bank Institute, The Nature
Conservancy and TEC de Monterrey today announced the creation of a "virtual
university" in nonprofit management for Latin American institutions.

The new initiative -- Social Leaders -- will offer interactive and
affordable courses taught by Latin American instructors from leading
academic institutions and nonprofit organizations. Students will
participate in the courses in real-time via email and the Internet and view
the courses live via satellite television at TEC Reception Centers, World
Bank Global Development Learning Network centers and other sites.

Courses will be available initially in 12 countries: Argentina, Bolivia,
Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Honduras,
Mexico, Panama, Peru and Venezuela.

"This initiative harnesses technologies and strategic partnerships to build
capacity among a group that is key to sustainable and equitable
development," World Bank Vice President Vinod Thomas said. "It will help
strengthen civil society in Latin America by improving the effectiveness of
organizations that represent and provide services to the people."

Courses on nonprofit administration, communications, marketing, financial
sustainability, human resource and leadership will begin in February 2001.
Early registration is available beginning today by e-mail:
[email protected]

"In the past, courses such as these were too expensive or too far away,"
said Patricia Leon of The Nature Conservancy's virtual university
initiative. "Social Leaders will offer Latin American organizations
affordable and easy access to the leading minds in nonprofit management."

"In Latin America, it is essential to finally unite the private, the
governmental and the social sectors and work together for the benefit of
civil society," said TEC Virtual University President Carlos Cruz Limon.
