I have a problem.
When I first read this message I was in a tearing hurry and only
skimmed it. More recently there was a proposal on CIVIC to hold a
discussion and try to send a contribution for the event. So I came
back to the original message from Daniel. And am horrified to
discover that although the invitation is in Spanish the supporting
information IN THE SAME MESSAGE is in English.
Although it is very late I think that Mistica should also have
something to say in Tunis to protect its right to linguistic
diversity. The EDT has recognised cultural and linguistic diversity
as a special focus area for Mistica (more on that soon), but I
believe that ANOTHER time to fight is NOW, in Tunis.
I took the extract below from one of the sites I sent to CIVIC
http://www.eclac.cl/socinfo/default.asp?idioma=IN
(There is or should be also a Spanish version
http://www.eclac.cl/socinfo/default.asp?idioma=ES )
THEY DO NOT SAY ANYTHING ABOUT LANGUAGES.
How then can we have "constant dialogue and cooperation among all the
Latin American and Caribbean countries," if we ignore issues such as
"language of discussion", "translation", "facilitating understanding
in a region with 5 languages inherited from Europe during the
colonial period, and ????? indigenous languages".
>eLAC 2007 is the Regional Action Plan for the information society,
>which was officially approved at the Regional Latin American and
>Carribean Preparatory Ministerial Conference for the World Summit on
>Information Society on June 10, 2005 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It
>is based on constant dialogue and cooperation among all the Latin
>American and Caribbean countries, and leading to the adoption of a
>common policy agenda.
>
>eLAC aims to:
>
>Move towards the formation of an information society that will
>benefit all the inhabitants of Latin America and the Caribbean
>
>Promote development through growth with equity
>
>Consolidate democracy and strengthen regional integration
>
>Expedite this process and reduce its economic and social costs
En solidaridad :-)
