suele tener vida independiente. Los relatores de estos foros globales suelen
ser expertos licuadores, capaces de hacer síntesis estandarizadas a partir
de intervenciones sueltas y de posiciones divergentes.

Asunto: INVITATION: Youth and Education E-Discussion March 22-April 3

  Youth and Education
The World Bank Child and Youth Unit
and Development Education Program of the World Bank Institute

Invite you, your colleagues and friends to join a
Global electronic discussion on Youth and Education
occurring online March 22-April 3, 2004

  Sign up here! http://info.worldbank.org/etools/youth2004/signup.htm
****************************************************************************

The purpose of the two-week discussion will be for young people around the
world and those who work with them to share ideas, opinions, concerns, and
successes in education with the team that is drafting the World Bank Child
and YouthStrategy. The summaries of each week's discussion will become
background papers supporting the Strategy.

Background

In May, 2003, the Child and Youth Unit launched an e-discussion with more
than 1200 participants to consult with youth around the world on the draft
of the first World Bank Child and Youth Strategy. The strategy paper
identified three particular areas in which the World Bank should focus in
order to improve the lives of young people around the world: Unemployment,
Risky Behaviors, andViolence and Conflict, with an underlying theme of
empowerment and participation running throughout the paper.
(Go to www.worldbank.org/childrenandyouth to access the original draft paper
and the weekly summaries of that discussion.)

In that first e-consultation and in face-to-face consultations with youth
around the world, participants called on us again and again to make education
a separate issue in the strategy?not just a tool to bring about the other
areas of focus.

This e-discussion is a result of that demand, and we look forward to the
insights we will gain through this consultation.

Format of the Discussion

At the beginning of each week, the moderator, Dr. Gail Thomas of Soka
University, California, will send out a message to participants outlining
the questions that will set the framework for that week's discussion. All
messages submitted to the discussion will be reviewed, and those that best
advance the discussion by adding new information, points of view, or questions
will be posted. Because we have to be careful not to overwhelm the capacity
of participants and their inboxes we will not be able to post everything and
may post only a segment of some messages. Please note, we will be careful not
to distort the original meaning of the messages, and may in fact contact the
writers to ensure that we have an accurate understanding of what you are
trying to say before we place a posting. At the end of the week, Dr. Thomas
will produce a summary document that pulls together the ideas, examples, and
concerns brought up during the discussion.

Suggested readings and reference

Although participants are not required to read additional materials to take
part in this discussion, you may find it helpful to read about Education for
All, Education for a Knowledge Economy, the Millennium Development Goals on
education, and the World Bank's Education program in order to learn about
what the World Bank is already doing to improve education in developing
countries.
