LATIN AMERICAN INTERNET USE IS LOW, BUT GROWTH IS AHEAD, REPORT FINDS
Issue: Digital Divide

According to "latino@merica on.line," recent study conducted by
management and technology consulting concern Accenture and Spain's Banco
Santander Central Hispano, number of Internet users in Latin American
countries is expected to reach 44 million by 2003, from just under 15
million last year. The study cited an increase in free Internet access,
financed
computer sales and aggressive promotion spending by Internet businesses as
factors that are boosting Internet use in the region. Current low computer and
Internet penetration is attributed to low per-capita income and poor
distribution
of wealth in Latin America. According to the study, in 1999 Latin
America accounted for only 2.7% of the estimated $8 billion in world-wide
online
advertising.

WOMEN DOMINATE SA WEB USE

Fifty-one percent of South African internet users are women, up from 38 percent in March 1999, according to new survey data from Webchek. Two thirds of net users in South Africa have English as their home language and 56 percent have a third-level education. Most users tend to have high incomes, but the number of users with lower monthly household incomes is increasing. (source: Saartjie http://www.saartjie.co.za/april01/internet6.asp )
