FUNREDES : Info About This Site

Info About This Site

The Networks and Development Foundation, FUNREDES, is particularly proud and happy to offer cybernauts with good intentions this Web site or FUNREDES' Information System (SIF), in which you will find a large amount of information about our interests and achievements, the scene which we have developed and the actors on whom we count. Being coherent, we have included the tools which Information and Communication Technologies, ICT, offer, to simplify the search of this information without reducing its systemisation.

The new server was acquired in August 1999 thanks to the decisive support of the Unganisha programme of the International Development and Research Centre (CIID/IDRC) of the Canadian government.

The server and programme migration was carried out with the collaboration of Mr. Jacquelin Charbonnel, responsible for the networks of theIndustrial Physics and Chemistry School in Paris who came to our aid in August 1999.

Since 1995, the company TRICOM S.A has helped us with hosting our server and with Internet access from its local network, FUNREDES benefitting from temperature−controlled environment and back−up generators through an agreement.

FUNREDES maintains its deepest gratitude for Sun Microsystems Computer Company, who, through its Interamerican Regional Office in Caracas had the courtesy of donating the first set of equipment (Sun Spark Server II) in 1995 which supported the FUNREDES.ORG node until August 1999 (the second lot of equipment donated by SUN was offered to the sister institution, Haitian Development Network (REHRED).

FUNREDES values highly the gestures that each of these organisations has made to enable FUNREDES to act on the international front.

Credits: architecture, design, structure, SIF maintenance
In 1995, the architecture of the SIF was conceived by Daniel Pimienta and Yacine Kheladi and implemented by Christian Hellfrich and Pablo Nuñez.

Yacine Khelladi (1996) and then Catherine Dhaussy (1998) made various improvements to the design. However, until 1999 FUNREDES did not have the funds or human resources to improve the design, structure or maintenance of this terrific tri−lingual information repository, which has been maintained in the form of ongoing updates described in the section "What's new?" and has kept a very austere appearance and a strucure which is not quite user−friendly enough.

During this time, Amauris Espinal has been responsible for its maintenance and the creation of various other sites which are hosted on our server. (Caribcad project, Beirut water conference, Fundación Palau, Civicus in Latin America and the Caribbean ). Various assistants and helpers joined the team and those whose contribution was noteworthy are directly mentioned in the page credits.

In 1998, FUNREDES, organized a tender to receive proposals for the general aesthetic design of the SIF. Ursula Chi from Peru gained first prize and thus inspired the next design of the SIF. Two of the best consultants (Mike Field and Olivier Kuhn) worked on the eventual restructuring of the SIF.

In 1999, the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) provided support for seven months for the restructuring of the SIF.
FUNREDES wishes to leave a very special place in this page for the work carried out by Mike Field. mike@funredes.org

After having reshaping the pages for the Languages and Culture project http://funredes.org/LC and whilst designing the database for the TRAMIL project of enda caribe, Mike Field carried out a complete and radical revision of the SIF's structure, based on the new design proposed by Ursula Chi and setting up the information in a database management system.

This enormous task consisted of making an inventory of all the information that had been accumulated in the SIF since its beginning and giving it a structure and aesthetic order. Mike Field and the other team members collaborated and used PHP and SQL technologies to create a site dynamically created from a database and script language. His work was completed in December 1999 when he finished his study placement.

The maintenance of such a site remains a task for FUNREDES to systemize, however, Mike Field's database administration interface with its high level of automation will considerably simplify this task.
